SOLUTIONS ARCHITECTURE, UX DESIGN & USER RESEARCH

Initial wireframe collation for a ‘Trainer’ type user

The FSC deliver training to firefighters and other rescue services from around the world, which includes urban search and rescue, incident command and industrial firefighting. Their previous method of delivering and grading training had some significant resource and monetary overheads, so they sought to create a blended digital and hands-on solution that would reduce these.

I worked with FSC to understand their business on every level. There is a wide variety of end users to the product: Learners, trainers, administrators and external auditors. It was vital to dig into their day-to-day pain points, so I could create a solution that serviced all, but without hindering each other. This involved in-depth meetings with all parties. From this I created a Statement of Work which catalogued the key issues and user stories the product would seek to solve.

The next step was designing the information architecture. This was a significant part of the design process as there are multiple stages to every aspect of the different user roles. I then designed a framework that would be underpinned by a learning management system. This involved knowledge of different types of integration that could be applied to the variety of systems that needed to share information (technical architecture). The result of this was an integration document that accompanied the design documentation. This included flows for all different types.

Other design documentation comprised of interactive wireframes and in depth functionality description, such that it could be used by the development team.

The programme is due to go live in Summer 2019 with a small cohort. It is intended to substantially cut paperwork, free up time for trainers to focus on core activities, improve consistency of training, provide live analytics, and lay the foundation for a distance learning system.
